John Grisham is a household name, and not just amongst the avid readers of his legal thrillers. He immediately started work on his second book about a bright young attorney joining a swish law firm, but everything was not as it seemed. He sold the film rights, and 'The Firm' was a big success. The main character was played on the screen by Tom Cruise in the film version. By this time, John Grisham books were big business and he was literary man of the moment in 1991, at which time 'The Firm' was a best seller.

In his book The Firm, we encounter a subtle twist to the universal American idea of success in the corporate and commercial world. It's every young lawyer's dream to join a prestigious law partnership, work hard 15 hours a day and eventually winning that coveted partner status and all that it brings. High salaries, huge bonuses, memberships of all the best clubs, a bottomless expense account and countless other perks. Of course, these things are just the material trappings of the real success, which is to know that you have made it at last. Mitchell McDeere, a bright law school graduate is seduced into joining a relatively small tax law practice away from the city by the promise of a large salary, BMW car and small mortgage for the house of his dreams. Never zoom in a shot:

I Wanted To Convert People!

After I had been into self-development for a few years, in the middle of 2005, I learnt about the effect that our thoughts, emotions and beliefs have on how we experience life. I think the first time I had heard about his was when I read The Power of the Subconscious Mind, by Joseph Murphy.

Shortly after this, I read a number of books by Dr Robert Anthony, followed by a CD program called The Secret of Deliberate Creation. I was amazed by what I heard and wanted to tell other people about it.

Inner Conflict

Nevertheless, while part of me felt energised by what I was reading and listening to, another part of me was full of doubt. This was a time in my life when I felt powerless and as though I couldnt do anything to change my life.

So, although part of me wanted to believe that I actually had an effect on my life and that I wasnt a victim, another part of me just wasnt having it. And the part of me that didnt believe this was the part that was the strongest.

The Source

It could be said that it was my unconscious mind that wasnt on board with this idea; whereas my conscious mind was. This meant that there was a lot for resistance, but this other part of me wasnt willing to give up

During this time, I learnt how important it was for me to observe my thoughts and to be careful what I think about. Along with all the effort that I was putting in to train my mind, I felt the need to share what I was learning with others.

One Focus

I felt as though I had to share what I as learning, and that it wouldnt be right for me to keep this to myself. After all, I believed that I was learning about something that was extremely powerful.

Therefore, I believed that if I held back and didnt say anything, it would have been similar to me having a cure for a disease and not sharing it with the world. To be more precise, thats how I saw it at the time.

A Different Outlook

I would talk about this stuff to my family, friends, and anyone who would listen, and in a lot of cases, it wouldnt go down well. The fact that my life wasnt completely in order was often seen as a sign that this was a load of rubbish; if it wasnt, surely my life would be perfect!?

It became clear that a lot of people had closed minds and that they would rather struggle than try another way - a way that might allow them to change their reality. These experiences had a negative effect on me, though, as I wanted them to believe in what I was telling them.

A Hidden Agenda

What this came down to is that not only did I want to have a positive effect on other people; I also wanted other people to agree with me, so that I could silence my own doubt. I thought that if they believed what I was saying, it would make it easier for me to believe it.

The problem was that this rarely happened, as these people would often mirror back my own self-doubt. I remember listening to Dov Baron around this time, this was someone who spoke about the law of resonance, and he said that the best way to show other people was to demonstrate it to live it and not just talk about it.

I Gradually Got the Message

I came to see that I had the wrong approach, and that it would be far better for me to focus on applying this stuff in my own life and to only bring it up when it was clear that someone would be interested. Through doing this, I would be far more respectful of other peoples boundaries.

I thought about the people who I would often hear in a populated area who tried to convert people to a certain religion, and this was not how I wanted to be. I came to see that the less doubt I had, the less I felt the need to convince anyone.

Howard Cosell was a former lawyer who, as a dutiful dad, had volunteered to describe his sons Pop Warner League game for a local radio station and saw his law career quickly replaced by a new and more lucrative one in broadcasting.

Coming to the game late myself from the courtroom, on our first special together, I was anxious and excited to meet him. I went up, introduced myself and said, Howard, you and I have something in common. He said, Whats that? I said, We both started out as lawyers. He just stared at me for a moment and said, So?

That was my crash course in Howard Cosell. Howard had been characterized by sports writers for so long as a certified curmudgeon, I think he gradually began believing it himself and felt compelled to deliver the crusty, cantankerous version of himself that he was convinced the public had come to expect.

He was rehearsing a routine in Hopes dressing room and came to a line he thought could be improved upon. I happened to be standing nearby so Hope said, pointing to the joke, See if you guys can come up with something better for Howard. I noted the line and went back to the writers room where about five of us threw lines made suggestions for the others to rule on until we had ten replacements that we all agreed filled the bill.

I hurried back to Hopes dressing room with the list. Hope was checking his makeup and motioned for me to hand the list to Cosell. He took it and, slowly looking it up-and-down, said, Is this the best you could do? I could see Hope wince. He obviously resented Howards assessment of his writing staff, one of whom, Charlie Isaacs, dated back to Hopes radio days.

He snatched the list from Howard, quickly chose a new line and told me to get it to Barney McNulty to put on cue cards.

Despite his being difficult, Howard always added an air of authenticity to our sports specials, so he was invited back many times. Our NFL special in 1980 featured this quintessential Cosell segment and showcased the popular commentator at his best:

HOPE: Do you just start talking, or do I have to light a fuse?

COSELL: Robert, your facility for the jocular riposte, and your mastery of droll repartee doesnt extract a measure of risability from me.

HOPE: Howard, either thank you...or youll hear from my lawyer in the morning Howard, youre such a personality,I wouldnt even know how to describe you.

COSELL: Thats easy, Bob. Basically, Im a journalistic interpreter, concentrating on the domain of athletic endeavor, a commentator who prides himself as much on his dispassionate veracity as on his eloquent and insightful reportorial aptitude.

HOPE: Would you make a needlepoint of that for me? Ill hang it in my office. Youve been on Monday Night Football for some time now. Have you ever thought of retiring?

COSELL: Not til the children are raised.

HOPE: The children?

COSELL: The Giffer and Danderoo [nicknames for his fellow sportscasters Frank Gifford and Dandy Don Meredith].

How to Strike the Right Balance Between Dialogue and Narrative

Do your readers loose consciousness ploughing through pages of narrative description? Or are they perplexed and bewildered because your snappy dialogue leaves them wondering just who is talking to whom? It's time to get your narrative/dialogue balance right. Here's how.

Modern readers in general prefer a story that moves along with a fair degree of alacrity. If not, they soon get bored, and when that happens your novel is history. That's today's book reader for you; spoon fed on fast action films and TV with perhaps little time to read anyway. But maybe the readers you are aiming at are more relaxed and cerebral and are quite at home with a slower paced tale. But which is right for you and your readers?

Take a careful look at published books or stories of the type you are writing yourself and gauge what proportion of the text is dialogue and what is narrative. Compare your findings with what you have written and see how it stacks up. It is vital that you get this right or you may fall between two stools.

And this is where dialogue comes in. Too much and the reader can get lost and disoriented. Too little and the reader can get bogged down and toss your tome aside.

TOO MUCH DIALOGUE

If your story has too much dialogue it is not unknown for readers to loose track of which character is speaking. And you need to avoid too many 'he said', 'she said' or 'said Mark', 'said Hermione'.

An excess of dialogue can be wearing and you may need to intersperse the conversation with snippets of movement or description. As for example:

'Maria looked up from her work. "So that's what you think of Grimble, is it?'

Carla nodded. 'He's passed his sell-by date if you ask me'.

Just a small movement like 'Maria looked up from her work.' activates the reader's imagination and gives them a picture to lock onto.

Imagine two characters having a heated argument. To break this up you could say something like:

'A removal lorry shuddered to a halt in the street outside followed by the blare of a horn from an angry motorist. Ronald stomped over to the window and closed it with a bang.'

This gives us movement and description, not only of the character Ronald, but of the traffic outside, which, incidentally, also echoes the turmoil going on inside.

TOO LITTLE DIALOGUE

If you find you are filling up page after page with too much narrative you may need to ask yourself these questions:

Does this piece of narrative add to the storyline or is it superfluous?

Would the story or plot suffer if I left it out altogether?

It may be all well and good describing at length the start of a new day, either good or bad, but could you just as easily save three paragraphs of purple prose by simply saying:

'Gail drew back the curtains and sighed dispiritedly as she took in the grey clouds and pouring rain.'

You can also use a character's dialogue to add a descriptive element. You could save the necessity to put in a long meandering flashback by writing something like:

'I often think about those hazy summer days when you, me and Dave used to wander over the downs picking the buttercups and daisies. Then we'd lie down by the pond in that little grove of trees. Remember? Lovely. I wonder what ever happened to Dave...'

But often you simply have to be cruel to be kind and axe those sections of narrative that add nothing to the story so that your narrative/dialogue balance is right.
