National Treasure 3 Stars (Good)

It took an inordinately long time for movie land to bring us a modern day treasure hunt worth watching, but Director Jon Turteltaub delivered big time in National Treasure, the story of a secret treasure that crosses the centuries.

National Treasure is the story of a vast bounty that continues to grow and change hands throughout time until confiscated by the Knights Templar as early as the 11th Century during the Crusades. The Knights Templar become the modern day Masons.

Eventually the treasure finds its way to our shores, and our founding fathers, several of whom were Masons, hide the treasure to help finance the Revolutionary War against the British.

Then the treasure was lost and six generations of the Gates Family carry on a search to prove its existence, the last of which is Ben Gates (Nicolas Cage). Gates is joined by sidekick Riley Poole (Justin Bartha), Patrick Gates (Jon Voight as Ben's father) and Abigail Chase (Diane Kruger).

Gates ends up stealing the Declaration of Independence to validate a clue and get the important document before the bag guys do (all treasure hunts have bad guys in the chase). Abigail, the curator of the National Archives, is pulled into the chase to recover the original document, and she eventually joins with Gates in a quest for the truth.

National Treasure is full of obscure clues, the trail of which keeps viewers riveted to the story line written by Jim Kouf and Oren Aviv, and polished by uncredited screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio.

It starts on the Arctic Coast with a 200-year-old meerschaum pipe found aboard a ship buried in snow named Charlotte, confirming the first clue: The Secret Lies With Charlotte. For the curious, meerschaum is a soft, white claylike material consisting of hydrated magnesium silicate, found chiefly in Turkey, so, in this case, meerschaum is a Turkish smoking pipe.

From there the original Declaration of Independence is stolen to confirm the presence of an undetected code on the back of the document.

Then it is on to the Silence Dogood Letters written by a young Benjamin Franklin when he was a printer with his brother. From there to the Liberty Bell at Independence Hall in Philadelphia and an ocular device (eyeglasses) hidden in a brick wall. Finally we are taken to Trinity Church near Broadway and Wall Streets in New York, and the grave of Parkington Lane.

In the end, the 200-year-old meerschaum pipe provides the "key" to the treasure.

This is a good film because of some nifty writing and direction by Jon Turteltaub. National Treasure loses the honors race for recognition by Oscar and associated award venues, but wins the viewer race by capturing its audience.

The unlikely path to finding the treasure is a 200-year-old wood staircase several stories high and fraught with crumbling boards and heroic escapes. I liked this film and I hope it shows.

Unlike the Indiana Jones trilogy with Harrison Ford, where you are drawn to Ford and his action adventure antics, National Treasure stays focused on the clues with the actors not upstaging the treasure hunt story line.

Turteltaub does this without the usual Hollywood props of sex, drugs, drinking, profanity, rape and murder, and gets high marks plus a Disney rating (PG) for doing so. The entire family can watch this movie without the fear of inappropriate scenes. There is some violence but by Hollywood standards for violence it is nothing.

Nick Cage does a good job in this film staying focused on the treasure chase, and Diane Kruger does most of her own stunt work in a harrowing car chase scene.

I like this movie despite some improbable happenings and filming goofs. None of this seems to interfere with the mission at hand: solving the clues and discovering the treasure.

See National Treasure. You will like it, especially if you like treasure hunts, or good story lines about treasure hunts.

Fashion in eyeglasses goes in cycles in the same way as general fashion. For example the small oval eye spectacle frames were in vogue in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, re-emerging in the 1990s. Originally the frames were this size for a practical reason - many lenses were ground from the mineral quartz and as it was difficult to obtain suitable pieces of quartz large enough, spectacle lenses had to be kept small! Digressing slightly, it is the material of choice for vandal-proof light fittings.

Unfortunately, although impact resistant, the material is certainly not scratch resistant which is an important quality to bear in mind when fabricating spectacle lenses. These days polycarbonate lenses, which are a feature of safety eyewear, are surface treated to make them more resistant to scratching.

Vintage Frames

Most people want to collect vintage frames to wear them. However there are lots of issues to be aware of. For example:

What materials deteriorate?

This is a slightly silly question as all frames deteriorate over time. Those the least susceptible to deterioration are metal-rimmed frames. However with frames from around the mid twentieth century and onwards it is common to find the end tips and the nose pads are plastic coated. The reason for the coating is that the base metal of spectacle frames often contains nickel, and if nickel is in prolonged contact with the skin it can set off nickel dermatitis. Although the end tips and nose pads on such frames are very prone to deterioration from acid in perspiration, the good news is that a good optical outlet can usually fit replacement pads and tips - these may not totally match the originals, but their positioning means they will be hidden behind your ears or behind the lenses.

Cellulose Nitrate

This material, first developed in 1850, was originally used for the production of movie film and for a short while was used in spectacle frame production. However it is essentially the same material as guncotton (!) and it is now illegal to supply this, either in spectacle frames (or in films either). It deteriorates over time, and with heat gives off an acid smell. However if it does ignite it burns very fiercely as it releases oxygen fuelling the flames. Over time the material crumbles and may auto ignite. This material is so dangerous that museums are not allowed to have examples stored or on display. You certainly do not want any nitrate frames!

Cellulose Acetate

This material was developed and used for the production of glasses frames in the early 1920s in France. Unlike its nitrate cousin this material was not flammable. It is a stable material and easily worked and colored. It continues until today to be used from spectacle frames. Over time, if stored in overly hot conditions it will tend to lose its plasticity and elasticity, making it brittle and the shapes to warp.

Perspex

This very strong material gained popularity in the fifties and sixties for upswept cats-eye supra frames. These eliminated the lower frame rim, substituting a nylon cord (like fishing line) which was held under tension in the lower rim of the spectacle lens that had a groove cut to take the nylon cord. Although the nylon supra design was strong, the material is very brittle, needing a great deal of heat before it can be adjusted to fit the person's face properly. If insufficient heat is used, it is common for the frame itself to snap and it cannot then be repaired. However it is actually relatively straightforward for the nylon cord to be replaced, should that break over time.

There are various other materials such as carbon fibre, which enjoyed brief popularity in the seventies, but there is not enough space in this article to cover less popular materials any more comprehensively.

Are the frames safe to wear?

Well, with the exception of cellulose nitrate (see above) yes, they are all safe.

Can prescription lenses be put into a vintage frame?

Of course any frame needs to fit you correctly. Not every frame will suit every prescription and the difference between the geometrical centers of the two eye rims and the distance between your two eyes can have a major influence not just on how well fitting the frame will be but also on the thickness of the lens edge. You will need to show your chosen frame to your eyecare practitioner as it is possible to calculate the expected thickness of the lens edge for your prescription and frame chosen.

If your frame has a plastic rim that totally surrounds the lens, this will need to withstand being heated, stretched larger than the lens bevel, then cooled which will shrink the rim to hold the lens firmly. Your eye care specialist / optometrist will be able to advise on potential problems - glazing an old frame in this way will probably only be undertaken at you own risk. It will be impossible for an optician to predict, just by looking at it, how brittle your vintage frame is, and whether the rim will tolerate this degree of manhandling. Reputable companies supplying vintage spectacles from the fifties will be able to give an indication on how robust the frames are likely to be but it is likely that they too will be able to offer any cast-iron guarantees, for the same reason.

Thin Film Deposition For Lift Off Essential Basics

Thin Film Coatings are sometimes applied to entire surfaces of substrates, "wall to wall" so to speak, in a continuous unbroken film. But many times the final form of whatever particular material is being applied is patterned so that it is coated in certain specific areas and bare in others.

There are two principal ways to achieve this effect:

1. Subtractive, or Etch Back process - the entire surface is coated, and then select portions are removed, leaving the desired pattern. The pattern generating step normally involves some form of physical masking agent and then an appropriate type of etching to remove what should be removed and not damage anything else.

2. Additive, or Lift Off process - the pattern generating step, which again will normally involve some sort of physical masking agent, comes first. This is followed by the coating process, which is similar to using a stencil. Only the desired pattern gets applied through the openings in the mask onto the actual substrate. The excess ends up on top of the mask and is removed when the mask is lifted off. This type of Lift Off Thin Film Deposition process will be the subject of this article.

A major consideration for choosing a Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) process for Lift Off is the pattern specification. If the pattern dimensions and tolerances are relatively large, a physical mask such as a thin sheet metal stencil can work and the process can be essentially any type. But for smaller dimensions, sharper line resolution, and tighter tolerances, the mask will probably have to be photoresist. To achieve clean lines, this photoresist is usually exposed and developed to create a negative slope, an "overhanging" edge so that the deposition can be shadowed beneath it leaving a small gap between the edge of the coated line and the photoresist coverage. There are also special dual layer photoresists for this purpose, giving a step overhang instead of a slope.

And to take real advantage of the capability thus afforded, which can give good results in micron or smaller dimensions, the deposition vapor stream must have a long mean free path and impinge on the masked substrate perpendicular to its surface. The former requires low chamber pressure, typically below 10-4 torr. And the latter normally requires a relatively long throw - the distance from source to substrate.

For both of these reasons, Thermal Evaporation is usually the PVD process of choice. The source is normally located in the center of the bottom of a vertical cylindrical chamber. The substrate holder (usually called tooling) is a dome rotating about a vertical axis centered above the source at a typical distance of 18 inches or more. The dome is commonly curved, a portion of a sphere with some radius of curvature. For Lift Off, this radius of curvature should be equal to the throw distance, which is the source to substrate (dome) distance.

If the source were a true mathematical point source, it would thus be located at the center of an imaginary sphere of radius R, with the actual dome being the topmost portion of said sphere. With process pressure typically in the 10-5 to 10-6 torr range, the mean free path - the average distance an evaporated atom or molecule will travel in a straight line before colliding with another gas atom or molecule - will be at least comparable to R. And with the vapor particles all traveling in straight lines to all points on the dome, each one is on a direct radial line and will strike the surface of the dome perpendicular to the plane that would be tangent to the surface at that point.

This condition produces perpendicular incidence on the curved dome surface, which is necessary for best pattern accuracy - a vapor stream coming in at an angle will not deposit exactly in the center of the photoresist (mask) opening as was intended. But substrates are almost always flat, which is a deviation from this ideal curved surface and therefore a deviation from completely perpendicular incidence. A good rule of thumb for high accuracy Lift Off patterns is to keep this angular error, the deviation from perpendicular vapor stream impingement on the substrate, to less than 5 degrees. And, for substrates such as semiconductor wafers in standard tooling domes, the vapor stream is perpendicular at the center of the wafer (zero angular error) and increases toward the edges, with the maximum error being dependent on the wafer diameter in relation to the throw distance.

At an 18 inch throw distance, a 3 inch wafer would thus have a 4.8 maximum error at its edges, with a 4 inch wafer having a 6.4 error and larger wafers having larger errors. At a 24 inch throw distance, the 4 inch wafer's error would reduce to 4.8 with a 6 inch wafer being 7.2. Larger wafers require longer throw distances for high resolution Lift Off results, and longer distances also require a longer mean free path which means better vacuum pressure.

Another important fact associated with Lift Off tooling as described is that, with the throw distance being constant across the entire dome, the intrinsic vapor deposition rate will fall off from its maximum at the dome's center directly above the source to lower values approaching the perimeter. In accordance with Knudsen's Law, this should follow a theoretical cosine curve for the increasing deviation of evaporant stream angle from zero (vertical) at the center to its maximum at the dome perimeter.

This intrinsic non uniformity of the deposition thickness should be compensated by a fixed blocking mask in between the source and the dome working in combination with dome rotation to effectively block a portion of the heavier central deposition to reduce it to the same level as the perimeter deposition. There are, of course details in the designed shape of this mask, but without it the thickness uniformity will not be optimal. Note that this uniformity mask is a large scale fixed blocking mask behind which the dome rotates, quite different from the fine scale patterning mask (photoresist) which rotates with the dome/substrates..

As with all such things, there will be details to work out in order to establish a good working process for your end product. Lift Off PVD thin film deposition processing however, can be a very useful tool to have available, especially when selective etch back is difficult or impossible due to the specific materials being used not having acceptable selective etchants available.

There are many threads of this throughout classic poetry. One of my favorites is the simple poem by Langston Hughes:

The melancholy of the quiet hours comes as a whisper that convicts the heart of all the cheap and simple things we have spent the wages of our lives upon. Most of us don't like thinking about such notions, dismissing them as idealistic fancy. But I cannot dismiss it. And why? Because the time is short. Life lasts for only a little while, and then is gone.
